Japan in September

September in Japan is the month everyone forgets to plan for, and that is exactly why I love it. The cherry blossom and autumn leaf crowds are gone, prices are still summer-low, and the country is quietly getting ready for its best season. Here is what you actually need to know before you book.

THE WEATHER

Expect real summer heat through the first half of the month, with highs around 27-31C (80-88F) and Tokyo's humidity still very much present. Things start to break by the third week, and by late September mornings finally feel like autumn. If you can choose your dates, aim for after the 24th.

TYPHOON SEASON

September is Japan's typhoon peak, especially the first three weeks. This does not mean cancel your trip - it means build in a flex day or two, especially around Okinawa, Kyushu, and the Pacific coast, and keep an eye on the Japan Meteorological Agency before you fly.

SILVER WEEK 2026

Mark September 19-23 on your calendar. This is Silver Week, a rare stretch of back-to-back national holidays that only lines up a few times a decade. Expect domestic travelers to flood trains, hotels, and popular sights during this window - book well ahead or plan to be somewhere quieter.

SUMO: AKI BASHO

The Autumn Grand Sumo Tournament (Aki Basho) runs September 13-27 at Ryogoku Kokugikan in Tokyo. If you have never seen sumo live, this is one of the most underrated things to do in the city - tickets are easier to get than you would think, and the atmosphere is unlike anything else in Japan.

FESTIVALS TO CATCH

Owara Kaze no Bon in Toyama (Sept 1-3) is a hauntingly beautiful lantern-lit dance festival, one of my personal favorites and still under most tourists' radar. Later in the month, the Kishiwada Danjiri Festival near Osaka brings enormous wooden floats hauled through the streets at full speed - loud, physical, and completely unlike the polite image most people have of Japan.

MY TAKE

If your dates are flexible, push your trip to the last week of September. The heat has broken, Silver Week crowds have cleared out, and you get the first hints of autumn color starting up north. Hokkaido in particular is the most comfortable place in the country to be during this window.
